Common Cold is a self  Limiting condition, the aim is symptomatic relief.

  1. Steam inhalations.
  2. Vicks Inhaler, Vicks or halls lozenges.
  3. Tab. Disprin 1 tds (Aspirin ) OR Tab Crocin 1tds (Paracetamol for relief from bodyache, feverishness).
  4. Tab. Foristal 1 tds (Anti histaminics ). OR Combination drugs eg. -Tab. Rinostat 1/2-1 tds. or -Tab. Wikoryl 1 tds.
  5. Otrivin nasal drops if blocking of nostrils (Xylometazolin ).
  6. Tab. Celin 500 mg OD * 6-10 days (Vit-C). 

If it progresses to Pharyngitis or Bronchitis, then add antibiotics.

  • Tab L-cin 500 mg od * 5 days or Ampicillin/Amoxycillin/Erythromycin/Ciprofloxaxin etc.

IF Attacks are frequent, (Allergic Rhinitis).

  1. Tab CZ3 1 od * 30 days (Cetirizine).
  2. Tab Telekast 10/ Telekast-L1 od * 30 days (Monteleukast + Levocetrizine).
  3. High Protein diet and Regular exercises.
  4. Inj. Neurobion 2 cc IM daily * 5
  5. Cap. Becadex bd * 30 days (Multivitamin).
  6. Tab. Ativan 1mg bd if anxiety / tension (Lorazepam)
  7. If  sneezing  and watery discharge, indicate allergic origin, use mast cell stabilisers.-Tab. Ketasma 1 mg bd * 3-6 months.
  8. Rhinocort Nasal Spray * in each nostril * 2 times/day * directed to lateral walls, protecting the eyes. (Budesonide)
  9. Inj. Histaglobulin 2 ml IM * every 4 days * 3 injections (Immuno- globulin+Histamine)

 Fever with Chills Think of Malaria and Urinary Infection In endemic areas, Rule out filariasis, (and if no cause is apparent, think of hidden abscess) Ask for Blood smear for M.P., Urine, Hb% & WBC. Quininga 300mg 1 tds * 10days ( Quinine) Tab. Amlar 3 tabs stat-single dose

Fever

 FEVER When a patient presents with fever, check the temperature with thermometer. It is an important record. Most fevers encountered in General Practice are viral, self limiting and require only symptomatic treatment. Symptomatic treatment Tab. Crocin 1 (Paracetamol) Inj. Febrex 2cc IM if fever >100⁰C or 38⁰C  Tab Trap 1 BD or TDS of bodyache (Tramadol ) or combinations with NSAIDs. , Ibuprofen + Paracetamol eg. Ibuflamar . P., Tramadol + Paracetamol eg. Ultracet, Calpol-T Tab. CZ-3 1OD if colds (Anti-histaminics ) General measures cold compresses or icebag - over forehead, axillae, neck etc. (fore detail , contact us ) bed rest with blanket. semi solid or liquid diet, Avoid cold water, Avoid exposure to wind. Avoid bath - only sponging. Before  labeling a fever as viral, you must look for (as a compulsory routine) pallor, jaundice, Neck stiffness, Abdomen for liver & spleen and auscultate the chest.
